Simona Halep’s return to the Grand Slam stage went as smoothly as could be expected.

The No. 12 seed in the women’s singles draw of the US Open won her second match in a row in two sets to become one of the first players to qualify for the third round.

Halep had a reprieve during warm-ups on Wednesday when she was shifted to Arthur Ashe Stadium. Following Olga Danilovic’s withdrawal from the event, Naomi Osaka advanced to the third round. Because of the bad weather, some of the games on the outer courts were postponed.

Wawrinka was the 2016 champion, but foot surgery has forced him to withdraw, allowing Murray, the 2012 winner, to compete in singles after boycotting the event at the Tokyo Olympics.

Murray competed in the doubles at the Tokyo Olympics, reaching the quarterfinals, but owing to a thigh injury, he was unable to compete in the singles.

Murray’s first Grand Slam victory came in the 2012 US Open, which he won in a big breakthrough year. His career has been cut short in recent years due to surgery in 2018 and 2019, and he will only be able to play in the second round of the American major in 2020.
