Juwan Howard: Why Did Punched, Why Hit, What Happened, Should Be Suspended?
Why did punched:
Michigan men’s basketball head coach Juwan Howard threw a punch during postgame handshakes after his team’s game against Wisconsin on Sunday.
As the men’s tempers flared, players and staff swarmed around them to keep them apart. That’s when Howard struck Krabbenhoft, who was close at hand, in the head.
It was not the first time Howard offered a similar defense. During last season’s Big Ten Tournament, Howard and Maryland coach Mark Turgeon had to be separated during a stoppage in play.
Why hit:
Michigan’s athletic director Ward Manuel said in a statement that the violence was “totally unacceptable, adding: “There is no excuse for any of our staff or student-athletes to get into a physical altercation with others regardless of instigating factors.”
He said he apologized to Wisconsin’s athletic director Chris McIntosh, and that university President Mary Sue Coleman was reaching out to issue an apology to University of Wisconsin chancellor Rebecca Blank.
As the men’s tempers flared, players and staff swarmed around them to keep them apart. That’s when Howard struck Krabbenhoft, who was close at hand, in the head.
What happened:
Juwan Howard was late to the handshake line. Other Michigan personnel, players and coaches filed through this pointless charade as prescribed, but he was nowhere to be seen for a bit.
And then he arrived as Wisconsin’s Greg Gard had progressed all the way down to the front of the Wolverines bench.
There was a lesson in this, people: Better never than late. If Howard wants to be angry about how the final 15 seconds of his team’s blowout loss to the Badgers developed, well, that was his right (even if he was wrong). The way to handle it, though, merely was to walk away.
Should be Suspended?
Both coaches were at fault, but only one threw what could fairly be described as a punch in response.
The play by play of the postgame incident and what led to it can be found here. In short, Howard admitted to not liking the timeout and telling Gard about in the postgame handshake line. “I’ll remember that s—,” Howard can be heard telling Gard in a video captured by an on-court reporter.
It was not the first time Howard offered a similar defense. During last season’s Big Ten Tournament, Howard and Maryland coach Mark Turgeon had to be separated during a stoppage in play. After a brief on-court exchange, Turgeon took a few steps in Howard’s direction, which enraged Howard.
