Freddie Freeman: Trade Rumors, Where is Going, Leaving Atlanta Braves
Trade Rumors:
The Atlanta Braves have acquired Oakland A’s first baseman Matt Olson in a trade on Monday. It means Freddie Freeman’s time in Atlanta has likely come to an end.
Olson, who grew up in Gwynette County and went to Parkview High School, made her MLB debut in 2016. He has won two Gold Glove Awards, three Fielding Bible Awards, and was an All-Star in 2021.
Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos got emotional speaking to reporters about the trade – “it’s tough” and the team essentially having to worry about themselves making sure they have a solid first baseman.
Where is going:
Freeman’s 12-year career with the Braves includes a wealth of records and achievements, making him one of the best hitters to ever play for the team.
He was drafted out of El Modena High School in Southern California by Atlanta in the second round of the 2007 MLB Draft, and debuted for the club three years later.
He was unable to speak specifically about Freeman due to MLB rules and players in free agency. Sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan that Oakland will receive off Christian Pache, C Shea Langeliers, SP Ryan Cusick and SP Joy Estes.
Leaving Atlanta Braves:
According to an industry source, the Blue Jays have been circling Freeman all off-season and some of his players have discussed how well he would fit in between them.
The club has also been hot on the trail of another free-agent lefty slugger, Kyle Schwarber, as The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal first reported on Sunday night, and they are ambitious enough to consider the possibility of linking the two. Although there will be other tricks it needs to work.
The Blue Jays worked a lot on trades before the lockdown and the many blockbusters completed in recent days are no doubt a by-product of pre-shutdown negotiations.
