Mark Reiland, a former Iowa wrestler and longtime coach at Iowa City West High School, died on Wednesday night.
In 1991, Reiland won the national title in Iowa.
He coached at Solon for two years before moving on to Iowa City West, where he stayed for 18 years. Before retiring in 2018, he won seven state titles at West.
His admiration as a wrestler and instructor is remembered by his peers.
“All of his previous athletes adored him and held him in such high regard,” said Mark Ironside, a former Iowa wrestler. “Like Wyatt Schultz here who passed away earlier this summer, he was a major ambassador for the sport of wrestling, and we’ve just lost a couple of fantastic guys in the sport of wrestling here in Iowa.”
