Sprinter Noah Lyles, who won bronze in Tokyo in 2020, broke an American record in the 200m at the 2022 World Athletics Championships with a 19.31-second run that beat Michael Johnson’s record set in… 1996!
But it’s the moment after the race that I want to focus on for a moment that some people on Twitter correctly noted: He walked over to the clock after crossing and checking it.
As the unofficial time showed him tying Johnson, he appeared to say, “Really?” He knelt, as if a child had just thrown his or her plate of dinner across the room. “Really?”
As he turned away, the official time was 19.31 seconds. An American first. He knelt to pray, then celebrated by taking most of his singlet off.
A spectacular run. Following that is an incredible sequence. A long-held record has been broken. I enjoy every second of it, and I hope you do as well.
