Mitchell Starc's Anticipated Return to IPL After Nine Years: Auction Buzz

Australian pace sensation Mitchell Starc is set to make waves at the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction, where he is almost certain to attract significant attention and secure a lucrative deal. Starc, returning to the cash-rich league after a hiatus of nine years, is poised to earn substantial earnings, making him one of the key players to watch during the auction.

The IPL 2024, scheduled to kick off in the third week of March, is strategically positioned to conclude just days before the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in West Indies and USA. Starc, like many other international players, views his participation in the 17th season of the IPL as crucial, providing essential exposure to the format ahead of the global T20 event.

Past Challenges: Legal Battle After IPL 2018

Starc’s previous stint in the IPL, during the 11th season, resulted in a legal tussle that took more than 30 months to resolve. Kolkata Knight Riders had secured Starc’s services for a whopping INR 9.4 crore ($1.8 million) in the IPL 2018 auction. However, a right tibial bone fracture forced him to miss the entire season, leading to unforeseen legal complications.

Despite having a premium insurance coverage of $1.53 million and paying $97,920, Starc found himself in a dispute with insurers who questioned the timing, extent, and status of his injury. The disagreement stemmed from Starc’s discomfort during the third Test match of Australia’s tour of South Africa in 2018, with insurers seeking validation for the injury.

Resolution and Redemption

After rounds of mediation and legal involvement, Starc emerged victorious in August 2020. Melbourne-based orthopaedic surgeon Russel Miller validated that the injury had indeed occurred on March 10, 2018, due to extreme physical activity, including bowling on a pitch with “uneven footmarks.”

During Starc’s initial IPL stint for Royal Challengers Bangalore, he was bought for INR 5 crore. Teams like RCB, armed with a remaining purse of INR 23.25 crore, may express keen interest in securing Starc’s services for the upcoming season, provided they are willing to allocate a significant portion of their budget to acquire his talents.
