The Candidates Tournament 2022 is a chess tournament with eight players that will determine the challenger for the World Chess Championship 2023. The competition will take place from June 16 to July 5, 2022, in the Palace of Santona in Madrid, Spain, with the World Championship following in early 2023. It will be a double round-robin event, as it has been for every candidate’s tournament since 2013.
The victor will compete in the World Chess Championship in a match against Magnus Carlsen. If Carlsen decides not to play, the top two finishers will compete for the world title in a match.
Ian Nepomniachtchi, Teimour Radjabov, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Alireza Firouzja, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, Richard Rapport, and Ding Liren are among the eight qualifiers.
